05.10.2024 On June 5, the Global Compact Network in Belarus held an event dedicated to World Environment Day at the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Global Compact Network in Belarus is the largest initiative in the field of corporate sustainability. The mission of the Global Compact Network in Belarus is to promote corporate sustainability and the importance of socially responsible business at the national level, including this activity in the global context to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN General Assembly declared June 5 as World Environment Day in order to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and improve the environment. The choice of this date is justified by the fact that on this day the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972) opened, which was followed by the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). World Environment Day has been celebrated on June 5 since 1973. In our country, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Environment Day was established as a holiday on June 5 and its celebration coincides with the date of World Environment Day. Since 2021, the Global Compact Network in Belarus has been holding annual events dedicated to Earth Day and World Environment Day. In 2023, Network participants assisted the botanical garden in creating the landscape exhibition "Japanese Garden". This year, more than 300 employees from 24 companies took part in the event, many of whom took their children with them. Pensioners - former prisoners of concentration camps, wards of the humanitarian association "Accent" joined the event. As part of the event, the company employees laid an Alley of 24 spherical maples of the participants and friends of the Global Compact Network in Belarus. In addition, the participants of the event helped the botanical garden clean the territory, weed and impregnate the benches with a protective compound. Companies of various forms of ownership and spheres of activity took part in the action: large industrial, telecommunications and transport companies, banks, agencies, associations. Both national businesses and representatives of international companies. All were united by one idea - to preserve the environment and our planet for future generations!
