Green treasures of Belarus

16.09.2017 - 16.09.2017
On September 16 at 10.30 in the vicinity of Slonim (Grodno region) an artificial reserve coenopopulation of the protected plant Potentilla rupestris L. will be laid out. This is the first event in a series of events planned for the coming years under the name “Green Treasures of Belarus” with the support of JSC “ASB Belarusbank”. The participants of the event will be representatives of the National Academy of Sciences – scientists from the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus – Slonim Inspectorate for Primorsky Krai and Environmental Protection, representatives of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Belarus – State Forestry Institution “Slonim Forestry”, representatives of the Slonim District Executive Committee and students of the Slonim District Environmental Center for Children and Youth, representatives of JSC “ASB Belarusbank”. Among the main environmental problems, biodiversity loss occupies a special place, and this problem is at the top of national priorities. Fulfilling the tasks of the Biodiversity, Bioresources and Ecology section of the state scientific research program Nature Management and Ecology, scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus work with unique populations of rare plants, develop strategies for their conservation, reservation and restoration. One such object is the rock cinquefoil (Potentilla rupestris L.) with the conservation status of category 1 (CR) - an endangered species represented by one population beyond the eastern border of its range. The Red Book of the Republic of Belarus recommends introducing this species into culture as an ornamental plant, as well as resettling it in appropriate natural ecotopes. The Central Botanical Garden has developed a system for preserving and reproducing the reserve gene pool of this population in accordance with local specifics, produced the required number of heterogeneous seedlings and determined the method of transferring from ex situ to in situ conditions in compliance with environmental safety standards. In 2017, held under the slogan "Year of Science - Economy", steps to popularize science and its achievements in the field of biodiversity conservation, long-term joint efforts to restore unique natural objects are especially important. The goal of this event is complex multi-level environmental solutions at the national and regional levels. We not only reserve the gene pool and expand the population field of a rare plant, but also unite the efforts of all interested organizations, create an ecotourism site and participate in social and educational processes. By joining the "Green Treasures of Belarus" campaigns, participants make their invaluable contribution to the flourishing and safe future of our country.
