History of the laboratory of introduction and selection of ornamental plants

Collections of decorative herbaceous plants of the laboratory began to be formed in the first years of the work of the botanical garden, since 1932. Then the laboratory was called the department of higher flowering plants. It is known from archival documents that already in 1936 chrysanthemums, hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, carnations, heliotropes, cineraria, cyclamen, pelargonium, primrose, obkonika, etc. were grown. In 1938, the formation began.

In the first post-war years, dahlias and cannas appeared in the collection, coloring, green cuttings and grafting of roses were carried out. With the appointment in 1955 to the position of the director of the botanical garden of Mykolai Vladislavovich Smolsky, a student and colleague of Academician Mykolai Ivanovich Vavilov, the work on purposeful formation of plant collections was significantly intensified.

April 3, 1958. an order was issued on the establishment of a department of decorative horticulture with a group of green construction in the Garden, which was headed by the director of the Garden - N.V. Smolsky. At that time, scientific staff A.S. Merlo, V.F. Bibikov, L.P. worked in it. Husarova, P.I. Lyavdanskaya, G.S. Kharuzhik (scientific staff), laboratory assistants S.S. In 1957-58. the department's collections included 2,066 species and varieties of ornamental plants, including roses - 765, tulips - 237, gladiolus 535, dahlias - 2, daffodils -75, irises - 136, lilies - 27, cannas - 21, peonies -10, phlox venikava - 115 varieties, asters - roses and gladiolus are admired even in modern specialists. After the completion of the construction of the stock greenhouses (1958), there was an opportunity to expand the collections of tropical and subtropical plants that were part of the laboratory until 2005.

By the mid-1960s, the collections of irises (325 species), dahlias (300), rare perennials (414), and an independent collection of rhododendrons began to form.

The laboratory preserves the memory of the employees who created and preserved excellent collections, who gave it for tens of years. In the 1930s, during the formation of the garden, collective and collections, M.P. Akhrimenka worked in the laboratory, who published articles on the cultivation of roses and flower seedlings, on the creation of portraits from carpet plants, on the cultivation of lemons, the collection of which was quite representative. .
